There are so many things to do around here in the summer, but only so much time, as many things require a significant drive. It's also hard to get too far from work. I'm a closet workaholic.
I checked one thing off the "to do" list last weekend. I went down to the town of Chitina on the famous Copper River to dip net for salmon. I went with 2 other guys and we intended to jump on a river charter and get dropped off in a good location. Unfortunately, we arrived on Sunday and the charter did not run that day. Also, to get to the good fishing spots, you really needed an ATV, which we didn't have. WE had to just do our best fishing from the parking lot and reaching in as far as we could. If you haven't dipnetted before, it's a helluva lot of work. We fished for a few hours and caught a few salmon between us and then we decided to fire up the generator and drink margaritas instead. Yes, we know how to rough it. We went there in a panel van with a a love seat and a double bed. It was a full blown apartment on wheels. That is the only way to go. The wind howls and the glacial silt gets everywhere, so tenting there is a brutal situation. When I get the pictures emailed to me, I'll show you the proof that I caught my first salmon.
Next on the list is sheep hunting in the Brooks range. I'm going to do that in the middle of August and temps can reach down to 0 F at night. We will be tenting! Haha. Too bad that panel van couldn't get up there. We'll be up in the mountains with the grizzlies for 3-5 days. If we survive that, we'll chase down the moose and caribou later in the fall.

Summer 2010 to date
It's been a rainy summer so far. Grandma and Grandpa drove up from Manitoba along with Joe and Arlene, but unfortunately they weren't greeted with a lot of Fairbanks sunshine. We went on a few trips and enjoyed a lot of cards. It was also nice that Samantha was able to come up from Reno for a ice 1 month visit this year, at the same time.
We were able to visit Chena Hot Springs, the Chena Pump House, the Museum of the North, the Large Animal Research Station, and Denali Park. The bus tour through Denali park was the highlight of the trip, and we were fortunate enough to get to see North America's tallest peak. It is rare to see. We were also lucky to see all kinds of animals in the park, including 2 grizzly bears right up close to the bus!
